Haiku Friday - Winter's Grip

Please note - there is a page with guidelines for Haiku Friday. The link is on top of the right sidebar of this page.

Oh. And the Linky thing now will remain open for 48 hours.

Haiku Friday

Winter's grip persists
the weather unchanging cold.
When will come the Spring?

Haiku Friday - Books - with linky

Once upon a time, Haiku Friday was run by Christine and she decided to give it up. She asked, as I recall, for someone to step up and take it over. No one did. Recently, I sent her an email asking if she minded if I took over Haiku Friday. I've not gotten a reply.

Essentially, taking over Haiku Friday means keeping the Avatar meaningful - and add McLinky so others can find other Haikus Friday. So that's what I'm doing. I've 'appropriated' her jpeg for Haiku Friday. The jpeg is not mine. It's hers.

Haiku Friday

Books. All man's knowledge.
Sewn and bound and stacking high.
One reads to escape.

Friday Haiku - Melancholy

Because it's been a while since I've done an Haiku ...

Haiku Friday

A melancholy
strikes and the mind turns off and
one stares straight ahead.

Blank, unseeing eyes
front for a soul in torment;
a visage forlorn.

But a mental slap
is all it takes. A hug or
kiss or warm embrace.

Melancholy flees
like the thief it is, in the
face of love's sweet touch.

Friday Haiku -

As of 12:01AM this morning, the challenge called "Is Whispering Nothing?" published in The Inferno, The Writer's site I manage in conjunction with The Artist Challenge, a site where visual artists practice their Art and Craft in response to a challenge word or phrase.

Check it out. I'll wait until you get back.

Haiku Friday

These days, so busy
full of life's anxieties
as Christmas draws near.

Presents for children
and decorating the tree
foremost in your mind.

Top to bottom clean
your home will be just perfect
with lights on the roof

But let's not forget
what the day is all about
It's Jesus' Birthday.

Friday Haiku - The Swan

Haiku Friday

The Swan

Outcast with braces
ugly duckling hid the swan
that altered the world

Written for and about Catherine Ryan Hyde, the glorious swan who wrote the book "Pay It Forward". If you would, go here to read the short interview I did with her, via email. When you do, be sure to click the link that leads to the "Reprint" article. You really don't want to miss it.

Friday Haiku - Black Friday

Haiku Friday

Today is Black Friday,
The day retailers wait for,
day of thanks giving.

Ndinombethe.

p.s. Sarah will be back both days this weekend. I hope you enjoy.
Velvet Verbosity has a post up and in it she lays out the next 100 Word Challenge. Pleased. Me, and the Word.

Haiku Friday

The 100 Words
is alive and well again.
The challenge renewed.

Comes again the time
To squeeze the generous thought
to five, seven, five.

To twist and bend it
hammer it into the mold
of five, seven, five.

The amazing feat
One hundred words, will here be
said five, seven, five.

I've done that once before - a 100 Word Challenge in Haiku. I think Velvet was pretty surprised. Shocked, even, if her reaction was any measure. So was I. I intend, however, to do it again - this time in honor of her return to us and the return of the 100 Word Challenge.

Yesterday was not the relaxed and easy day it WAS to have been. I wound up going to the office to work on some pressing issues and I never made it to that 'dog and pony show' put on by the hardware vendor. Oh well. Next time.

I did, however, pick off another of the little Gremlins that have been bugging me - and the side benefit, I suppose, is increased functionality for Luscious (for those of you who don't know, Luscious is my new(ish) MacBook Pro) now that I have the SSL VPN setup working for the Macintoshes just as well as it works for Windows. Now, all I have to do is trade in my Air Card (a pcmcia card) for a USB Modem from Verizon and I've got it licked and I can totally use my Mac for all of my support efforts from remote locations. One reason to do that is that my Windows laptop (an elderly Compaq Presario) only runs about an hour on battery, whereas Luscious runs for four hours - and that includes wireless access, full time. Apple rules!!

Friday Haiku - Any At All

Haiku Friday

The Haiku Mistress,
Is driving and on the way
To an interview.

A meeting with her,
looked for, anticipated,
will be realized.

And tomorrow, Cat,
We'll meet at a restaurant,
A party of three.

How lucky I am,
to be able to meet up,
with any at all.

One Knight's Story - Part 4

Sweat glistened on his body as he danced his well rehearsed routine with the Falcata, jabbing and slicing, parry and thrust, whirling about, taking on imaginary enemies in a never ending, never slowing ballet of deadly maneuvers. He wore woolen trouser legs belted over a loincloth and nothing else - no shirt and nothing clad his feet.

Squire knew this routine by heart. Every day that they weren't on the move, the morning hours would be spent in this practice - indoors when it was practical, but these days, in this strange and foreign place, outdoors, in the sun and the heat and the dust.

"Need you water, M'Lord?"

"Yes, Squire, but when I stop, please? Wait until I stop."

"Aye, M'Lord, but perhaps you should pause in your labors? I grow concerned for your well being."

"My well being is what motivates me, Squire. Do you see the scars on my body? Do you see their number?"

"Yes, M'Lord."

"Each of them is a reminder, Good Squire, of a time when I was too slow, or too weak, or unable to anticipate and someone was able to get close. Too close. The greater the strength of this arm, the greater the endurance in these legs, the more I can exercise and keep my wind, the fewer of my enemies that will get close enough to cut me, the less the chance my enemy will out think me."

"But the Sun, M'Lord, grows hot, and higher in the sky. The cool of the morning is past and the heat will make you faint."

"Fine. I will pause, but only long enough to take water. Besides, it's time, I think, to exercise the other arm. Fetch me my long sword, Squire, the while I slake my thirst."

The Knight handed his Falcata to the squire and accepted the jug of water proffered. The squire walked over to the pile of gear under the tree where he had been sitting and placed the Falcata in its sheath, and pulled the long sword from the belt which held it. Not for the first time, he wondered at the marvelous balance of the sword.

"How is it, M'Lord, that the much shorter Roman sword is the same weight as this, a much longer sword?"

"The Falcata, Squire, is made of bronze, which is mainly copper and tin. But copper is a very heavy metal, and, in bronze, is not lightened much by the presence of tin. It is made thick in its parts because it is not strong enough to make as thin as the long sword. Now, the long sword you hold in your hand is made of steel, and not just any steel, Squire, but Damascus steel, the lightest and strongest steel sword in the world. It is the best, Squire, and I will have no less than that. My life, after all, depends on it."

And Squire thought to himself, "As does mine, M'Lord. As does mine."

Friday Haiku Friday

Haiku Friday

Cyber family
has been so troubled of late,
and I feel badly.

The lovely Lotus,
our Dear and Sarcastic Mom,
lives in a hellhole.

Full of awful mold,
the landlord has done nothing,
to make it better.

Our Braden lives there.
He belongs to all of us.
Is he sick from it?

Is Lotus sick too?
From the mold all through her house?
That they will not fix.

Friends are stepping in.
Some are trying to help her,
get out of that house.

Please, can you help her?
Go here, and read about it.
Find a way to help?

Fabulous Friday Haiku

Short and to the point
As any haiku should be
Problem is, no point

I have naught to say
my mind is an empty box
a present gone wrong

coal in the stocking
blank page in the typewriter
hole in the beer glass

I am a failure
you come for entertainment
leave, emptyhanded

on the other hand
maybe, not having a point
is a point, itself

Friday Haiku - painting

Haiku Friday

The canvas awaits
the touch of brush and color
that which makes it art.

the canvas is blank
toned, but otherwise naked
like a writers page.

Once it is begun
it flows from start to finish
anxious to be born

but starting is hard
the first stroke, like the first word
the hard one to make.

And what will it be,
this art, a thing of beauty?
or perhaps ugly.

And of those who judge,
who will be kind and will lie?
who will truthful be?

I will not judge it
beauty is in other eyes
other beholders.

I am the father
I will have given it life
I cannot be fair

It is up to you
you must call it good or bad
secretly, I know.

Look at what I got!!! From Tiff at Three Ring Circus. She is the heroic mother of 7 children (count slowly: one, two, three, four, five, six, seven - now you know what I mean by 'heroic') and the proprietress of one really cool Aussie blog.

p.s. Because of time constraints, this FRIDAY blog entry has been published on Thursday evening.

Friday Haiku-100 Word combo

Words are bold, sometimes
writ large so we don't miss them
they shout loud to us

young people are bold
sometimes brazen and foolish
bold without wisdom

our leaders are bold
and their bold has brought us war
where is the wisdom?

little kids are bold
they try to do things and learn
from things that don't work

the things that cause pain
become that which they avoid
bold becomes a tool

what tools do they use?
those we have chosen to lead
what things do they learn?

discipline? respect?
humbleness? One thing well done -
they shout loud to us.

The above is a Friday Haiku and 100 Word Challenge (the subject of the challenge is 'bold') all rolled into one. I don't usually get political - or apolitical. As a Viet Nam Veteran, I saw too many young men die. At the time, I thought there was a reason to be there. As a now older man I see little reason for war and no reason to sacrifice the lives of our young men and women. I suppose my objections will fall on deaf ears. I will not be able to make any difference. Man has always fought wars. And I guess they always will. And young people will die. You would think the 'older, wiser' people who lead them to war would know better. I do.

Friday Haiku without Haiku Widget

I do not know if
I'll ever do this again
Haiku on Friday

Poetic license
once explored, can only lead
to poor sentences

Besides, I find that
people look at me funny
as I count fingers

And too many times
I lose count and do it wrong
then I look stupid

And I need no help
looking stupid. I can do
it just fine in prose.
