art class painting decision

This is the picture I'm thinking of using as a basis for the painting I'm to do for my upcoming art class. Pay no attention to the whitish spots - those are raindrops on the lens of my camera - it was actually raining at the time the photo was shot. You can see the drops on the wire in the foreground. They haven't fallen away yet - at least, not at the time the picture was taken.

This is the original shot. The above photo is an 8x10 crop out of this photo. I cropped to 8x10 dimensions because this painting will be 16x20, each side twice the size of the photo. Simpler to extrapolate.

The idea behind putting this out here is to get an idea of what you, my audience, think of my choice. The working title of this piece is "Ireland in November". Ireland looks a very lonely place at that time of year. Everything is NOT green, as it is during the spring and summer. And the sun never rises very high in the sky because of the high latitudes at which Ireland lies. So the sun isn't very strong and doesn't impart much warmth - in it's light or in it's presence. Here the sun is absent. It's a chilly, rainy day along the road to Waterford in the very north of Galway county. This is the ancient kingdom of Connemarra, a land still wild, and lonely, but full of the legends of the land.

I definitely sense the chilly, loneliness in this photo. I actually like it and the title you gave. The crooked fence up front is great too. However, I think I like the bottom image better. For some reason, I like the tree line on the right side.

A great picture Lou... definitely has a lonely feel.

Sandy: I kinda like the bottom one, too, but it seems to static, to me. The waterfall is too centered.

Elissa: Thanks. I really want to go back there. As lonely as it felt, I felt at home there. Strange, eh?

Catch! I've flung some blog bling your way

I love the picture. You get a real sense of the isolation.

Hiya LouCeel, found you via Kelley.

I like both photos bit I like the tree line and more of the crooked fence being visible in the second one. The waterfall in the second is more centred but the flow of the river in the second is more to the right of the picture so the water generally seems to be more to the right - make sense?????

The colours are very winter - the oranges and browns in the grass - but I love it.

I hope we get to see a photo of the finished painting.

Marita: Thanks. I have several bligs I've got to acknowledge - and some, still, I need to pass on. Monday. I'm glad you like the picture - here's hoping the painting does it justice.

Gemisht: You will see the painting as it develops. In sequence.

I love the fence... it frames the scene and I feel as if I am behind it.

nice.

I love the look of this picture. I bet it would make a fabulous painting.

It's a very melancholy picture! Neat!

I suck at design, I'm strictly a code monkey.

I like it.
I would choose the second one though. I like the wider angle.

Thanks for stopping by my blog and passing along the tip! Since I'm here, I'll comment that I like the second shot better just because it's more complete in my simple mind. What I mean is that the top of the hill/mountain isn't cut off, and there are more trees for a better idea of what shape they are. All that said, I suppose if you were going for the leaving it to the imagination thing, then perhaps the first would be best, and that's fine, but I still prefer the second ;)

I like the second picture best BTW, the wider angle gives a greater sense of the isolation.

Let's see - ohmommy, amanda, andreamuse, witchpoo, nicole: Thank you, you guys. My wife says I sound like a girl, sometimes, when I do these comments, so, in a REALLY manly fashion - aawww, shucks.

maggies mind: Thank you. Just the kind of helpful critique I've been looking for.

marita: You, too. A real critique. Thank you, so much. (damn, feminine side creeping through again) Later.

I liked the picture but the first one more for it makes the waterfall seem more alive. and the second one more because you can see more of where the river is going.

will make a great painting.

the second shot does have more fence in it. oh I don't know - paint them both and call it a Set.

No contest in my mind - I really like the cropped picture better. I don't have much art in my home that is "centered", I prefer angles, lighting techniques, and things left to the imagination.

The cropped photo also reminds me of my favorite artist's work - very "Andrew Wyeth".
