What follows is offered in response to Velvet Verbosity's 100 Word Challenge. The challenge, this week, is "Crisis".
From where he sat, the Captain could hear his radioman trying to raise Firebase Charlie, the closest unit to his base with the firepower he needed.
Apparently, he wasn't getting an answer.
His base was under fire from three sides - mortars and small arms. Harassing fire. Fire intended to keep heads down. He wondered what "Charlie" was up to.
A messenger entered his bunker, handed him a Field Bag. It had blood on it.
"The Lieutenant, Sir. He's been hit. Sargeant Baker has taken over. Sarge says to tell you they're comin', Sir. Thousands of 'em. They're at the fence."
Ndinombethe.
P.S. The location is fictional - the story, basically, is not.
