Haiku Friday - Veteran's Day

Haiku Friday

Day of Remembrance,
Those who fought in all our wars,
This Day given them.

Today is Veteran's Day. It's the day we remember all those who served in our military - during War, during Peace, at home and in lands far away. It's the day I say a prayer for my friend Gordon M. Briggs, who, on a warm Spring day in 1966, was shot by a sniper while on an operation in Quang Tri Province. I couldn't believe he was dead. He looked like he was sleeping. It's an image I've never managed to forget.

Blessings to you and so many survivors who have memories like that. Like my Grandfather, whose ship went down with all hands while he was on shore leave. Brothers, friends, cousins, in-laws. Fighting so that we can live free.

"War! What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing.

War, it ain't nothing
But a heartbreaker
War, friend only to the undertaker
Ooooh, war
It's an enemy to all mankind
The point of war blows my mind.

War can't give life
It can only take it away."

Such a strange juxtaposition, knowing the evils of war and the uselessness of it as a way to solve our problems and honoring those who fight them. But I do honor you and your friend.

It is a great time to remember all those who have fought for what we take for granted every day - our freedom.

I am glad that you were able to return from your service whole and complete. It is a job that anyone could have done and that everyone expects to be filled... but only a few find what is necessary to go on and serve...
