the Cubs

Only because I do not know what tomorrow may bring, TODAY I have to say it - the Cubs have won 7 in a row. I wanted to mention the winning streak while I still could - Sunday's game has not been played yet, as I write this, and I don't want to get to the time I'm putting together "Monday Meanders" ... well, you know. I don't want to jinx it, either.

However.

Everybody knows that the Cubs haven't won a World Series since 1908. That's the longest term of frustration in professional sports in the U.S. That doesn't mean, however, that they haven't had their chances. Several times in years following the 1908 win the Cubs won the Pennant and made it to the World series. And lost each time. They won the National League Pennant in 1929, 1932, 1935 and 1938. The year I was born, 1945, was the last time the Cubs APPEARED in a World Series.

But.

1935 was special. They were in a dogfight with the Cardinals for the National League Pennant. Early in September the Cardinals were leading the NL race - but the Cubs put on a 21 game winning streak in September, edged out the Cardinals, and won the pennant.

That 21 game winning streak is the longest in Major League history.

Wouldn't it be nice if history repeated itself. Wouldn't it be nice if history COULD repeat itself.

That would be something if it happened. That is all I am going to say on the matter...

Since I don't have a favored dog in the pennant fight, I'll cheer for your beloved Cubs. it can't hurt.

Take it from a Red Sox fan. Sometimes those long streaks of disappointment do end.
