Monday Meanders 1-24

Bears lost. The Packers are going to the SuperBowl. The Bears played terrible football, on offense, for three quarters. One quarter of good football isn't enough against a team like the Packers. That said, the Defense kept the game within reach, and but for ONE mistake by Caleb Hanie, the THIRD STRING Quarterback, that led to Haji's touchdown, the game could easily have been tied at the end of regulation. So close. But so far. The good thing is that the Bears now know they have a solid Quarterback to play understudy to Jay Cutler. And if he should falter ...

Saturday, I went to the Vivian Maier photography exhibition at the Chicago Cultural Center with a friend from The View Finders, a photography group I belong to. If you don't know Vivian's story, allow me to direct you here, and if you'd like to see some of her work, then scroll through the posts here.

The majority of the work presented in this showing is stuff she shot with her Rollei. The format a Rollei twin lens reflex shoots is two and a quarter inch square. And she shot black and white. Exquisite black and white. Her photographs are memorable. Even stunning. It is obvious she belongs in the pantheon of photography's greats. It's going to be several years, yet, before all of her work comes to light. There are over 100,000 negatives to scan and print. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of undeveloped rolls of film she left behind.

There are also a few of her belongings on display, as well. Some of her hats, and some of her cameras. A Rollei, an Exakta, and a Leica with the telephoto lens. Apparently, she shot her color stuff in 35mm. There was little of that on display - but what was there was impressive.

She has had an effect on me.

I have discovered that many of my photographs, cropped to square format and rendered in black and white, are better photographs when presented in that fashion.

I don't know if you guys like these - but I do. At least, I like them better this way than the way I shot them.

Now, If I just had a medium format digital camera.

The two little boys look like they are taking a break on their way home from a pee-wee football practice.

I'm sure it as accidental but I love that the top of the building behind your older son looks a little like he's wearing a hat Both pictures are much more dramatic in squares and B&W.

I agree. I like the B&W square photos.

I was SOOO hoping the Bears would make it. I don't follow football or even sports, but I wore orange and blue yesterday anyway in favor of my home team. Dern it.

Hope you are doing great.

I do like them, especially the one of the boys.

As for someone hanging one of their photos on the wall, well, yeah!

I like these shots a lot. As for the football game, wow! I ended up with no fingernails, and Raji almost gave me a heart attack with the way he carried that ball out there, so recklessly! So,who will you be rooting for?
