What follows is in response to the 100 Word Challenge, authored by the commanding Velvet Verbosity. The word this week is "Unbidden".
It's this time of year, more than anything else. It's the change from warmth and sun to crisp coolness and gray clouds. The comfort of green is gone, replaced by the temporary browns, reds and golds that exist before everything goes barren. It's just the time of year, that's all.
The days get short. It gets dark early.
People need warmth and sun and the days are just too short.
And so the sadness comes, unbidden. Unwelcome. Unlooked for and unplanned for.
But it's just the time of year, that's all. Brown and cold and sad.
Wait until Spring comes ...

I think that is a fitting description of this time of year. There are some people that say they enjoy this time of year most of all, makes me think of people who smile small smiles at the misery of others...
Just an opinion.
Ah, but I love this time of year. Makes for a wonderful writing atmosphere. (Hugs)Indigo
What a wonderful way to capture the melancholy of the passing seasons. You have a gift.
Great description...I love it.
I love autumn- it's nature's apology for winter, only you get the bouquet beforehand.
Yes, I know the low feelings I get when the nights grow longer and the days grow shorter. I do so hate that part of fall and winter. It is the most depressing.
You've made me feel it all, Lou, as if the words were mine!

I'm hoping to avoid the winter blues this year. So far so good...
Here's to a less melancholy winter for you too.
Dark - Cold - sadness, they are all here but ........ just hang in there unitl the season changes! I like the direct and indirect messages!
I love this, Lou. I'm working hard at resisting metaphor.
Totally relatable. I really enjoyed it...despite the beauty of this season it does harken to darker, sadder days.
I get the SADs in November. And as Joni Mitchell says, I also get "The Urge for Going".
This is great, Lou. Not at all overstated, (or understated for that matter) which nicely shapes the tone of the piece. Love it.
Very beautiful.
