Ah, the Vicissitudes of Blogger

To say I'm a bit miffed is an understatement. Not at the fact that Blogger was offline - at least, in my area. (Apparently, the outage was widespread, but not Nationwide.) No, I'm not upset at the outage - but at the way the outage was handled.

There was no information. None. None about the cause. None about the efforts to remediate the issue. And no estimates of time that the outage might extend.

The outage started sometime Sunday evening, and whatever the cause, it was fixed sometime this afternoon(Monday). Again, there is no accurate information regarding the extent of the outage - not in time and not in area.

I know we don't pay for our blogs here, on Blogger. And that means we have limited rights here, on Blogger. What rights we DO have are extended to us through the generosity of Google, the company that owns Blogger.

But Google's generosity is is a Velvet Glove. Hidden in that glove is the fact that Google earns a substantial buck off of our blogs. Advertising. Those of us who use Adsense, either for income or for access to statistics about our blogs, are feeding the coffers of Google. And though I don't know this for sure, I'm sure that BlogHer and other organizations of similar ilk, which derive income from ads on blogs, are required to share some of that income with the organization which gives them the vehicle for generating that income - Google.

So we who blog are the bottom of the barrel. We are treated poorly, in that we are ignored during such times as that which we have just experienced. We don't deserve to know what's going on with the systems which support our blogs. We have no right to know what affects our ability to access our blogs - to create new content - to render new comments - to continue the dialog within our community.

The community, I might add, which helps to pay a good portion of Google's bills.

I was wondering what happened. Frustrating isn't it?

I sometimes think what will happen if my website is suddenly blocked, or disappears, or Google crashes entirely. Yikes. But, the world will not end. I wonder if it's possible to save my whole blog to disc? I'd be sorry to lose all that writing.

dear LouCeel, you'll never make it in this country...here things get disconnected, switched off, whatever, without warning, without explanation, ALL the time... darn frustrating!

I was beside myself, and wondering if I shouldn't jump to my own dot com sooner rather than later. SO ANNOYING.

Dude, you can mess with Obama, the FBI, the Marine Corp, but you can't mess with Google. They rule the world.

Yet another family trait, methinks. I too am driven to whistle in the wind.

I got it from my dad, who was a firm believer in squeaky wheels (not to mention totally scrambled metaphors). How 'bout you?

I do not have a blogger blog but apparently I visit way more than I realized and it drove me crazy too! I clicked the link that offered more information, a link that had not been updated since March! Being in the dark is the worst!

To live in Italy is (among other things) to experience baffling, frustrating, and bad bureaucracy! I'm not good at it, yet. Information goes a long way to help.

Blogger is the reason I have my own domain. When I need help I get it and when I have questions and concerns they are answered. To me it is worth the $100.00 per year. Plus, I run ads on my blog and make twice that much per month! I'm not getting rich but I'm also not working without some recompense.

And now, 'Vicissitudes' has been in my head all day. Wonderful word, but will I get any sleep???

So glad I pay the $7 a month to maintain my blog! Well worth it for the lack of hassle and freedom to tweak.

Love Ron's comment! I guess humble bloggers are on a need-to-know basis when it comes to the tech workings of Blogger.

I could swear I've left a comment here a few days ago?
Did it end up in SPAM as so often with this darn Blogger thingy?
