I played all yesterday evening with story lines for the "Nightmare's Dance" Challenge on The Inferno and I think I have a start on a new 'Nightmare'. This is the start - tell me what you think .....
He felt the tap on his shoulder and fingers of cold fear gripped his chest. He forced himself to breathe and turned to face his tormentor.
"Leave me alone."
The pale faced figure that stood so close to him, exhaled an icy breath in his face. He spoke in a breathless and raspy whisper.
"I can't do that. You know I can't do that. I can no more leave you alone than you can stop breathing. I am your best friend. I am your worst enemy. I am all your bad memories. I am all your hopes and fears. I am your nightmare."
"I know who you are. I know what you call yourself. What I don't know is why you won't leave me alone ... why you won't let me wake up?"
"Well, of course, while I have you here I want to keep you here .... what's the fun in letting you go, eh? Ha, ha, ha, haaaaaaaaaaaaa."
"Oh good. The Diabolical laugh. Like I haven't heard THAT in a while."
"Oooooooo. Sarcasm. I like Sarcasm. I THRIVE on sarcasm. More please?? MORE?"
"Just leave me alone. Let me wake up."
"Oh, but I can't. I have some new thrills for you tonight. Something else ... for you."
"What are you going to do now? WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO?"
He was alone in the trees, but he knew his wife and children were out there somewhere. He yelled for them ... he screamed for them ... but the howling wind drowned out his voice. They were lost. HE was lost.
And the wolves were coming.
The first howl came to him on the wind. He must find them before the wolves do. But he had no idea where they were. No idea what direction to take. He felt the hopelessness begin to overtake him. He turned this way and that but nothing seemed right. He stumbled and fell. He wanted to lay there and sink into the ground and the hopelessness tightened its grip on him. But, he forced himself to stand.
The Howl came again.
It was closer.
More to come .......

wake UUUUP!!!!!!
Good thing it's 6:15 in the morning, because if I read this at night, I'd be up for a while. Geez.
Oooo - I love it!
This was scary...in a good way.
Awe crap... I just read that before bed. Thinkhappythoughts, thinkhappythoughts, thinkhappythoughts.
You sure can write, Lou. You've got all these stories inside, just aching to get out.
Shadow: He can't - at least, not yet.
Ree: And we wouldn't want to keep you awake, would we?
Ashlie: Thank you, Ashlie.
Joyce-Anne: My job is done here.
Hyphen Mama: Thinkhappythoughts.
I'm about to go to bed, too. Except, well, now I probably won't! Love it.
LOL, you just have to love Halloween. Now that is a really spooky nightmare. Looking forward to more my friend.
Scary!
Now I hope I don't get nightmares from this :D
Yikes!!! Okay. So glad I read this at 9am. As always, you had me glued all the way through.
