I found fatboy

When I was about 6 months old, my mother grabbed her little butterball son, held him up over her head and said, "There's my little fat boy." Somehow, that became my nickname as a kid. It stuck with me until I went into the Marines at age 17. Now, when I reported to boot camp in San Diego, I measured 5'7" tall and 125 lbs. I had a 29 inch waist. And the trousers were STILL loose. But my nickname was fatboy. Until I got to boot camp. And then it changed to any one of a series of rotating names like "boot", "shit-for-brains", "turd", "asswipe" and anything else the drill sergeant could think up. But at least it wasn't fatboy anymore.

Anyway, I found some more pictures from the Great Glider Event, as requested by neutron. (30th anniversary, actually) Annie had them on her laptop. The first picture is the landing of the second ride. Just a few feet off the ground - seconds before touchdown.

The next shot is the one I referenced yesterday - the one with the grin. Click on it and pop it out. It looks like the Michelin Man in the front seat of the glider. Now you know why I thought of my childhood nickname when I saw this picture.

Those of you who have been here for a while know I like to take pictures. And I have a pretty nice digital camera. The pictures above were taken with the camera I bought Annie for our anniversary. A Canon Digital Rebel Xti. She took 371 pictures in the two hours we were at the glider port in Hinckley, Illinois. She likes taking pictures, too

Was the landing accompanied by "holy crap, holy crap, holy crap!" ??? Or maybe that's just what I spout when I'm super excited, doing something I am completely enthralled with.

It looks like you are having tons of fun! Maybe you need to do it again very soon.

Awww...what a great smile you have on your face :) Ear-to-ear! That is so sweet you both share a love for photography.

If it makes you feel any better, my childhood nickname was, Jenba, which the neighbours and cousins translated into Jumba. So I was thiscose to Jumbo my entire childhood years and I'm a fairly smallish girl.

You're smiling like a maniac in both of those pics, that's awesome.

hyphen mama: You're absolutely right. I need to do that again as soon as possible.

Sandy: I was SO much fun. And yes, Annie has always had a good eye, she just never liked the complexity of a 35mm SLR. But she is lovin' her Rebel, and she is learning how to use it in 'manual' mode - which is the most 'creative'.

Huckdoll: Yup. I was. Smiling, that is. And it was So. Totally. Awesome.

Awesome! What a treat for you! I hope you are able to get back up and do that again soon. Would it have been possible for you to have taken some pictures while in the glider? Maybe next time you could be carrying the camera!

I called my BoyChild 'Pookie' until he was over a year old. When he started responding to it, I figured I better change my ways before he permanently became a Pookie. Oh - and you just look like you had a blast - not like the Michelin Man.

Would you look at that. Front wheel isn't even on the ground and you're smiling for the cameras!! Looks like you had a great day for it.

I take hundreds of pics at a time, too- glad to know I'm not the only one driving people nuts with the camera...

Childhood nicknames are the best. Mine was Timmo but I later was dubbed Timoteo the shampoo man and also Tiny Tim. Those ones weren't my favorites.

The look on your face says it all.

Flying terrifies me but don't tell anyone. I hear the Rebel is a nice camera and I really need to upgrade. Great pics!

I've always wanted to fly, mostly with a red cape, but I never thought of a glider. Now that seems exciting!
