Friday Haiku

Haiku Friday

self portrait painted
an exercise in terror
not so bad, was it?

I surprised myself
easier than expected
not so bad, it was.

I think it looks good
happily, it looks like me
not so bad, is it.

Not bad at all! :) The frame works well and I love how your portrait sits a little on the side.

Sandy: thank you for the kind review. My art teacher encourages us to stay away from the 'front and center' kind of depiction of the subject. It makes the subject too static and 'boring'. And Lord only knows, I try not to be boring.

Funny that you said this was an exercise in terror - the look you captured shows a touch of panic.

Well done!

Fantastic! Very evocative.

Portraits are notoriously difficult. You did very well :)

Wicked good! You're getting your money's worth with the lessons!

I already told ya what I think, but I love that you picked black. It really offsets the undertones and draws you inward, esp. to the eyebrows.

I think it's wonderful! :) You are a man of many talents. Truly.

queen goob: Introspective. The look is introspective.

elizabeth: Thank you. Evocative of ...?????

Girlblue: Thank you. It was easier than I expected, though.

witchypoo: I just realized, that since last September, I have spent $435.00US just on classes - 21 classes, to be exact. 42 and 3/4 hours. Money well spent, if for no other reason, I have had a world of fun and found something I really enjoy.

Rebecca: Thank you Reba.

Way more talented at art than I am Lou. Thanks for the laugh on the last comment you left even though there was also tons of truth in your statement.

I looked at the colors you used and I thought of the chocolate syrup again.

I do like the portrait. And if it's a true likeness then - you some handsome.

Maybe you need a slogan: Will trade portraits for flying lessons.

what were you thinking? To me you look sad. It is not the mouth it is the eyes. I can't stop looking into them and thinking you are sad.

Not bad at all Lou!

You do look a little solemn though,

That is a really geat painting. My self-portrait would be a series of geometric shapes with sticks for limbs protruding. Serious, it's quite sad.

AFF: Don't know how I missed you the last time - but - a big part of my skill seems to be picking out the 'right' frame for a piece.

sogeshirtsguy: Have you tried 'art'? And you're welcome.

warriorwoman: It 'looks' like me - I'm not sure you could call it a 'true likeness' though. But thanks.

hyphen mama: I'd be willing to trade portraits for more than that!! I just don't know any willing women.

kelley: The highlights in the eyes were the last things I did to the piece. when I stepped back to look - I knew it was done.

myst_72: Solemn is okay. Most people think I look sad. I eas looking at my face in the mirror, trying to find the light parts and dark parts and not paying too much attention to exact details. The expression is more from memory than what I saw in the mirror.

Eve Grey: Thanks. I think it's the best piece I've done.

Nice self portrait Lou. Rembrandt painted over 60 self portrait. Recently the Cincinnati Art Museum had a small (3 self portraits) of Rembrandt's work from 3 different stages of his life. My favorite self portrait was not in the show, it is at the Met Museum of Art, and was done a few years before he died. When I first looked at it in my 20's, it was just another painting. In August 2006, I was in NYC for a wedding and had an opportunity to visit the Met. Rembrandt died at 63. And, I was 63 when I looked at that self portrait again after my own life had experienced many years. When I looked at his portrait in 2006, the pain and struggles that he captured in his face, meant so much more to me because I was able to relate what he had been through as a husband and a father as well as the ups and downs of life. That's what I see in your self portrait, a man who has lived a very full life. Happy Father's Day Lou.
