Sarah - Reveille

From last time ...

He snuggled his head into the softness of her, again. She ran her fingers lightly along the top of his head, feeling the stubble there, sensing the tension leave the man and she felt him relax into her.

She lay there a long hour before she finally drifted off to sleep. She knew she needed sleep. Tomorrow was going to be another interesting day.

And now ...

Jake finished drying himself and stepped back into the room where they had spent the night together. He quickly got dressed and lifted the shade a little, to see what the day looked like it was going to be. It looked like it was going to be like every other day out here - sunny and hot.

He looked at the form of the woman laying in the bed, asleep.

"C'mon, sleepyhead. Reveille."

She pulled the blanket up over her head.

"What time is it?"

"It's just now 7. We don't have a lot of time to mess around here so c'mon, get up, get in the shower and let's get crackin'."

"I haven't had anything to eat."

"I know. Neither have I. If you get your butt out of bed, we'll have time for chow, but if you're just going to lay there like the Queen of Sheba or somethin', we won't."

He reached down and grabbed the end of the blanket and pulled it off her in one fell swoop.

"God, you look good. You better get in the shower. Now."

She sat up in the bed and swung her legs over the side, her hands covering herself inadequately.

"Turn around. I'm naked."

Jake's mouth fell open, but then he shut it and did as he was told.

"Look, I'll go over to the Diner and get us a booth. You want coffee?"

"Yeah. Order me two scrambled with wheat toast, okay? I won't be long."

"Alright. God you look good."

"Shut up, Jake. Go. Get outta here."

He left the room and walked out to the lobby.

"Mornin', Ma."

"Mornin', Romeo."

"Don't start on me, Ma."

Ma glared at Jake over the top of her National Geographic.

"Don't tell ME not to start on you, Jake Bertrett. You hurt that girl and by God, you'll wish you'd never heard my name."

"Don't worry, Ma. That's the last thing I'd do. You want anything from the Diner when we get back?"

"Don't change the subject. And no. I don't."

"I love you, too, Ma."

Jake walked across the dusty lot to the pay phone out near the road. He got in the booth, dialed his number and waited for the phone to be answered.

"Hello, Sully? It's me, Jake. I'm fine, thanks. Listen, about that casino job where all that money got liberated. You and I need to talk ......"
