100 Word Challenge - Rose



What follows is offered in response to Velvet Verbosity's 100 Word Challenge. The challenge, this week, is "Rose".

100 Word Challenge 
 He opened the door of their flat to silence. 

The shades were all drawn and there was a heaviness to the place - a deadness - that was unusual.

She always had a radio on, or the stereo.  The shades were always up on sunny days and the windows open.  "For fresh air", she would say.

He called her name.  "Caroline?"

She did not answer.

He moved from room to room, opening doors and looking in, but she was not there.

He knew she'd gone.  And he knew why.  Last night's fight.

"Damn", he thought, "I guess the bloom's off the rose."

So many times we say things in haste, said when our emotions are running two steps ahead of our thoughts and words fall out of our mouths like the first few stones before a rock slide...
