100 Word Challenge - Nothing

What follows is offered in response to Velvet Verbosity's 100 Word Challenge. The challenge, this week, is "Nothing".

"She's dead, you know.  There's nothing you can do."

The young man, a boy, really, sat at the foot of the bed, looking at the machines, now silent, hoping against hope to hear them start their chorus of beeps and chirps again.  Hoping against hope to see her chest rise and fall with a breath, any breath, some breath.  "Just BREATHE, dammit."

"Yeah.  I know, Doc.  She doesn't look any different.  She should breathe, twitch a little.  All those machines shouldn't be so quiet.  It's so silent in here now... that's how I know.  There's nothing in this room anymore."

Ndinombethe, ubuntu.

I've been in a room very similar - very powerful, and a heart-wrenching read.

I haven't gone through that sort of loss, and I dread the day it does come.

Haunting.

Even when it is expected - it is a shock when the room becomes silent. Well done, my friend.
