100 Word Challenge - Vanished

What follows is offered in response to Velvet Verbosity's 100 Word Challenge. The challenge, this week, is "Vanished".

Haiku Friday

The day Melanie Byner's daughter vanished was the day she went insane.  Not all at once mind you, but slowly, as her mind fixated on finding her daughter, to the point where she no longer cared about herself, her surroundings, anyone she knew, or anything anyone had to say to her that couldn't lead her to her missing child.

She was always seen about the town.  Looking in alleyways.  Scouring nearby fields and wooded areas.  Calling her daughter's name.

Eventually, it became the only word she ever said.  To anyone.  Anywhere.

Dirty faced ... stringy haired ...

And then, she, too ... vanished.

Sad... losing her daughter left her empty inside... all those dreams that would never be fulfilled... kisses never given nor received... tears of pain from scraped knees nor tears of joy from weddings...

She was empty... a soul forever in search of itself...

I could absolutely see myself slowly losing hold of reality if one of my kids simply vanished. It would be unbearable.

oh yes, as a mom, I could see this happening to me. Simply vanishing in the wake of their loss.

it was harrowing and true. I am sitting here trying to catch my breath.
