I've been riding a bit, lately. And I seem to have accumulated a number of old bicycles that I'm working on and then selling. The idea is to make enough from the sale of the old bikes - which have been restored to good mechanical repair and ride-ability, by me - to eventually finance the purchase of a really nice cruiser bike. And, of course, this effort has to be completely self-supporting, so it's going to go slow. The bike I want is going to cost more than $500 when I get done with the specifications, and when one makes ten or twenty dollars on the sale of an old bike - it takes a while to save what is required.
The bike, above, used to belong to #2 Son. His current bike is of similar ilk, but larger. This one has 24" wheels and it sat in the garage for more than 10 years. It was just taking up space, so I fixed it up and sold it, using that money to fund the purchase of two more bikes to sell and some of the stuff I'll need to fix 'em up. At this moment in time, I have 4 bikes in various stages of repair, getting ready to sell.
What's more important, though, is that I'm riding. My legs are getting stronger and my endurance is already much better than it was at the beginning. And I enjoy it.
I've started a group on Facebook. It's called "Biking the 'Burbs" and the intended audience is those who build, repair and ride bicycles in and around the Chicago Suburbs. The hope is to share information about riding trails and repair techniques and maybe even how to build a bike from scratch, if we're lucky.
All I need to do now is figure out how to get people interested.

There is a new shop not far from my apartment building where the cat fixes up old bikes. He also finds them per request... real neat set up and a nice guy to boot!
You certainly have a lot of tricks up your sleeve, Lou. Something like this, taking one interest to help fund another is how I manage to get by each month! If something doesn't make dollars, it doesn't make sense!!
Even though the roads are narrow, there are some amazing places to ride in Omaha... and I am sure the same can be said of Chicago, but I have to shill for my current team some!!
The Lions game Monday night should shut up many of Jay Cutler's critic. The offensive line could not protect him. Granted, they were going up against a terrific defensive line, but when you are a 10, 11 win team, you win that kind of game when the quarterback is hanging tough and doing his thing. Phillip Rivers and Drew Brees are the ones doing it this year, along with Matthew Stafford for the Lions. But Jay is getting killed. He deserves not only credit, but an offensive line!
Your group is such a good idea. I'm sure you thought of craig's list to sell your bikes and maybe get the kind you want for less. Although if the group comes together, they are sources of both as well. Have fun and good for you!

We have about 15 bikes in our garage (we are carless. very green, no?)
I have a nice pretty one with wicker basket, and a mountain bike for when I need to keep up with Sean. Chas took his mountain bike to school today, saying "I dunno what time I'll be home, we're going jumping!" He left his mobile phone home OF COURSE. When visitors come, we usually have the perfect bike for them! So come and visit, and bike the Dorset countryside! :)
