Tuesday, The Last Day of May

There are times when this strange feeling comes over me - it's something visceral and usually, totally unexpected. And, unfortunately, fleeting.

It's usually something visual or aural that causes it to arise. And when it comes, I am momentarily unable to participate in whatever it is I am doing. For I am lost in time.

What happens to me is that I am overwhelmed by feelings, physical feelings, I felt as a child. I don't know how to describe it other than that.

It can be something I see on TV. Or a song on the radio. But something will trigger this feeling and it becomes almost like a fugue state.

It soon leaves and I am left with nothing but the memory - but for that brief instant in time, I have been taken back to childhood. And enjoyed the trip.

I know. It's weird.

I wonder if I'm the only one this happens to.

No, you're not the only one. It is a feeling that is quite hard to describe, but I think you did it well.

The human mind is amazing, and that's just one demonstration.

Nope. Not the only one, however, I could never articulate it that well. ;-)

My phrase for when that happens is "I just flashed to ..." I think it says something about how our brains are wired, all the neurons and dendrites and stuff. Those little electrical impulses just race around our neural pathways, lighting up memories as they go. Very cool, I think.

It's SMELLS that do it to me.

You are SO not alone in this. Scents and music typically trigger this "flashback" in me.
