Tiw's Day, Day before Wodan's Day

Ever notice that, with as much as the English language has borrowed from Latin and the Romance Languages, English seems to have ignored Rome when it came to naming the days of the week, except, curiously, the weekend. What's up with that? It's just one of those things that's been stuck in the back of my mind for a while. It's like, who decides? Who said that the third day of the week should be named after the Germanic God Wodan (Wotan)and not Mercury? Did somebody make that conscious decision?

The January Challenge for the 'View Finders' group is flame. Those of us who choose to do so must submit a photo that 'creatively' uses flame. We are admonished NOT to do the cliche - no pictures of Grannie and her 100 birthday candles. We are further admonished to not burn down the house. Hmmm. That wouldn't exactly be creative anyway.

Finances are arranged for #3 son's schooling through the end of this school year. Fingers crossed he does well enough to keep his scholarships. And toes. And anything else that crosses without pain.

I have a new Android phone - a Samsung Galaxy S 'Mesmerize' - and it is fantastic. So far. My experience has been that as you load up Android phones with applications, there are more and more things competing for resources within the phone and, therefore, impacting the User experience. So. My suggestion? Try to minimize what you ADD to an Android phone. First of all, it will come with quite a bit of stuff that will make the system work for you. There WILL be things you NEED to add so that the phone 'fits' you and your lifestyle, but just don't go overboard.

Brain dump closed.

Your musings about the days of the week make perfect sense to me. I often wonder about the evolution of things leading to life as we know it. Who was the first to pick that prickly green thistle and think, "Hmmm, I wonder if this is good to eat. Oh, good, some of it is good to eat. Not the rest, though. It makes you choke. I know, let's call it 'artichoke'."

Artichoke? Really? Why not carrot? Or cow? Oh, wait, those were already taken.

That is cool about your son... must make you proud...

Even if a super-duper phone could add to my life, I don't want to have one... it is WHAT it will add that I wonder about... leave that to the techies such as yourself...

I have wondered about the days of the week myself, and the exact same thing... never found an answer worth anything though...

Congrats on your new phone! I wouldn't know what to photograph featuring fire. Mine would probably be too cliche.

From living in Italy, I know why it's the weekend days that Rome named. They're days off! As for the other days- no clue. Inner fire holds my interest but I don't know how you capture it in a photo. And good for your son, and you!
