I am so sorry. But I just can't ignore what I read.
Yesterday, it was reported that Tom Delay, once and former House Majority Leader (back when the Republicans held power), said Bunning (R, KY) "was brave" doing what he did to delay unemployment benefits (one man filibuster), and that "People are unemployed because they want to be."
The amazing thing to me is that Delay and people just like him get elected, time after time, by their constituencies.
They tell people that Health Insurance Reform is bad because there are people that are going to freeload and take advantage of the system.
They tell people there are going to be 'government' Death Panels deciding who will live and who will die.
They tell people that unemployment benefits are bad because they encourage people not to work.
They tell people that Creationism should be taught in school to the exclusion Evolution and better science.
Who ARE these people? And Why, Why Why do they get elected?
To my mind, it all comes down to motives. I believe there may have been a time in this country when those who were elected to serve went to Washington to do exactly that - serve the people.
Today, the one and overriding motive of the Party in opposition is to see the President fail. They no longer serve the needs of, the good of, the people. They serve the needs of their Party.
Partisan politics serve the worst motives of man - bipartisan politics serve the needs of the people. It has become that simple.
We may never see it again.

I haven't been more disgusted with our government than exactly right now.
It's not that I don't agree with policies or bills. It's that they cannot even get along long enough to be productive and pass anything. They aren't debating the issues in an effective and reasonable manner. (Unlike some Americans, I DO understand there are 2 sides to issues and do care what the other side believes.)
Instead, they are acting like angry 2 year olds.
Brave? Nope. Hardly. They're a bunch of overpaid cowards who don't understand what it's like to live outside of their little elitist bubble.
As for wanting to be unemployed?! My husband is an inch away from being unemployed because of their stall tactics on The Tax Extender Bill. I've gotta tell you - he definitely does NOT want to be unemployed.
Sorry. I don't usually do the politics schtick either, but this hits home.
I had thought the Bush terms were bad (still do). But the ignorance and downright ugliness that serves this country claiming representives of us the people...Never before has those words seemed like a blatant lie.
It hasn't been about the people in a long, long time. I think this country has forgotten why we have the freedoms we do. We did the right thing in putting Obama in office and giving way to hope.
The thing is we needed to vote in statemen and congressmen that don't put up doorstops every inch of the way.
I've never been devoid of hope or pride in my country the way I am now. We have a government that is more for show than action. (Hugs)Indigo
Could not have said it better. While it goes both ways, the GOP seems to really be detached from reality.
*head/desk* I intentionally sabotaged myself so I would get laid off, I practice Munchausen by proxy to keep us in insurance hell and I'm saving up a butt load of pills for when my parents are past their prime....
When will we have elected officials who work to help constituents and not just themselves?
Bunning's point was well taken. He said fine on the extension, but how are we going to pay for it. Paygo. Delay is a first class nut job.
I agree. It is a sad state of affairs.
All of Washington, I think, is detached from the rest of the US. I'm disgusted with both parties. This post of your clinches it.
I ask the same why questions all the time. The answers are more disturbing than the questions I think. Our country is run by the corporations that pay for the campaigns and lobbyists of our "elected" officials. Scare tactics obviously work and our country is full of individuals who eat it up. Religion is still far too powerful in our politics and its all because they have more money than anyone else. Tax free of course.
Why else would rich oil tycoons ever take a job that pays peanuts compared to their corporate cushions? They are "protecting" their interests at the expense of ours. It seems in their mindset, so long as the rich stay rich and the poor stay poor, the middle class can do all the heavy lifting.
I think it was John Adams who said this country will be doomed if there is ever just 2 major political parties. I think he was right. Sadly, he was right.
Couldn't have said it better. Just thinking about it makes my teeth ache.
How in the name of all that is good, great and holy did we come to the point that having 36.3 million people, including children, with no health insurance is okay? We're the ONLY developed nation that can make that boast. And we're going to let legislators who have universal health coverage tell us that they deserve it and we don't?
These uncovered children are our future. These uncovered adults are our struggling neighbors. Let's tell these legislators that they can't have health care until they figure out how to provide it for everyone.
I love it when you talk politics.
Wow Lou! Sounds like the people like it when you write about politics. You do a good job of that too. You have a way of touching people.
If they ever want to read my stuff, it may bore them to tears or put them to sleep.
Keep it up my friend!
I’m not one to usually talk politics because I do not have all information to do so. I admit that I have not always paid attention like I should have, but I’ve been trying over the last few years.
That being said, I totally agree with Hockeymandad’s comment. I think the majority of our politician’s have another agenda; being their own well being and not that of our country. I also can’t see how it can work with only two parties. It reminds me of when the Chicago White Sox play against the Chicago Cubs. You have fans that are so unyielding that they can’t see that they’re both rooting for Chicago.
To All: I don't usually 'go political'. I don't feel comfortable expounding about the whole process - but this thing with Delay just set me off.
Your comments are so, SO appreciated. Each and every one. Since we all seem to be of similar mind, I'm not going to answer comments individually, like I normally do. Let the comments stand on their own - as testament to the sorry state of affairs things have gotten to.
Thank you all. I promise to behave myself going forward.
What I want to know is, why are all the thinkers here not being heard while all the tea- party extremists are?? It seems like we're the minority- but are we?
Of the People, By the People, For the People??
Nope.
Hasn't been for a very long time.
It's a business. The winners are the ones with the deepest pockets.
What Hyphen Mama said.
I couldn't agree more.
