One of the advantages of normally posting at 12:01AM is that if, for some reason, one misses one's scheduled time for posting, one has the whole rest of the day to put the post up that one missed. It let's one do things like catch up on sleep, drink a little too much wine, perhaps, or go out and par-tay until all hours. I must plead innocent to any charges of wild partying or too much wine - the last time I went to a truly wild party, I believe Nixon was still in office and as far as the wine is concerned, all I have in the house is a nice Spatlese that I'm saving for Christmas. So that leaves catching up on sleep. Actually, it's more like sleep caught up with me.
Enough excuses.
Something I've never talked about here is my taste in wine. My affinity for Ron Zacapa Centenario, the very fine 23 year old rum from Guatemala, is well documented, but my taste in wine has not been a subject for discussion. I guess it's because my wine palate is fairly limited. I'm not much of a fan of dry wines. Reds are almost always too dry or tart for me. I prefer a slightly sweet to mildly sweet wine. My favorite wine is Spatlese. German whites - Riesling. I love a good Spatlese or Auslese. Kabinett is too tart and the later wines like BeerenAuslese or Trockenbeerenauslese are too sweet.
Rieslings like a long, cool growing season. 2007 looks to be a good year for German whites.
I may have to stock up.
Peace.
p.s. It does seem, though, that posts out of 'sync' - out of the normal rhythm and pattern, do tend to suck, a bit.

I'm a simple girl. I prefer a rum drink when I drink. A rum and tonic with a twist of lime is a refreshing drink not too sweet. I will have a glass of wine when the occassion calls for it. I tend to prefer the *cheap* stuff. My wine pallet has never been developed and my knowledge of wine is so very limited I don't even try to pretend to know.
if you're up to a taste adventure, and even though you say you aren't particularily fond of reds, i'd like to arrange for you to taste a special red one... one from the heart... my sister's wine estate in the namib desert that is. i'm obviously prejudiced, but i loved it (when i was still drinking). partially 'cause it's from my sister's vineyard, partially 'cause it's REALLY GOOD. up to it?
My experiences with wine over my lifetime have included the extremes. I have many stories and some of them are even a little funny. Perhaps I will take a break from my usual writings about the economy and money to write some funny stories about me and wine. I started out only drinking wine on Friday night as part of the Jewish Sabbath when I was a little boy. My grand father would lead us in the blessing over the wine in Hebrew and then I would drink something that we called wine. It was sweet and thick almost like cough syrup and it was made by Mogen David, which means star of David. Later in life, I had the opportunity to taste a few others wines from around the world. We produce some very good wines right here in the United States. Don't think you have to buy imported wines to get a good wine. I have drank some expensive wines and some cheap wines, but after a few glasses they all taste the same. :)
I guess I'm not a wine drinker. Sure, I'll have a glass but only once in a while. I'm what some might call a cheap date for it doesn't take much alcohol to get me drunk. Have you ever tried any wines from Long Island?
23 year old rum?
My that must be a treat, no doubt about that. My taste in wine is quite opposite to yours. I prefer French to German, I prefer dry wine, but I like real sweet wine too,( with some foie gras,oh shock!!!) but then it has to have a twinge of acidity or citrus ) but I loathe the stuff in between. I love rosé wines in Summer, and I have some wine every day. Looks like we're real opposites where wine is concerned? LOL!
I use to be a real aficionado of Mad Dog 20/20. Recently my tastes have migrated toward Manischewitz. All of this probably means I shouldn't be commenting on this post at all.
I like wine, sometimes I have even loved wine. I've never met a German wine I liked they taste awful.
I stick with the Italians or the French, even South Africa.
After a couple of glasses I forget which country I'm toasting and get on with the drinking.
We have the same wine palate, I think. I only like white and specifically riesling or zinfandels.
Lou, if we were at the same dinner table, we'd need two different wines open. Which would be ok because we'd both get more.
I clearly need to drink more wine. For the purpose of researching. I just don't feel as sure or in touch with my palate as you do. Yes, research it is, and thanks for the idea! :)
I like wine and tequila, the occasional beer. I used to, that is, because the dang doctors either tell me I should not drink, or prescribe me drugs that require you to avoid alcohol.
Sigh.
Now I am jealous, Lou. I didn't mind you having all these women reading your blog and commenting, but now you have gone too far. This last post of yours on wine is totally below the belt. You have one woman proclaiming she is a cheap date and that she gets drunk easily, and another saying she should drink more wine. I can't compete with that, I'm throwing out a yelloow flag. Fifteen yards penalty, unfair inducement.
Patsy: You don't need to 'Know' anything. It all boils down to what tastes good to you. Period.
Shadow: yes. I am. And exotic wine from the Namib Desert? Who wouldn't?
Moneythoughts: I remember getting sick on Mogen David as a young man. Very young. Ahem.
Joyce-Anne: I'm not sure that long island wines get much distribution here - but I'll look into it.
Jientje: Not so opposite as you would think. Sweet with a tinge of tart is the perfect description of an Auslese.
Honeybell: Just as wine comes in many different forms, so do the palates that appreciate the wines. It all depends on what tastes good to you.
Warriorwoman: I have heard the South African wines are special. we'll see.
AFF: We are SO MUCH alike.
Ayewonder: Now there's a man who appreciates 'la difference'.
Maggies Mind: All in moderation. As much as I love the taste of my Zacapa Centenario Rum, it had taken me almost a year to drink the bottle I have. There's about two shots left.
Julie: You just take care of yourself and leave the drinkin' to me. Well, in moderation, that is. I know - that's a pain. An occasional shot or a glass of wine is nice.
Moneythoughts: Yeah, but I still can't get 'em to come over to the house.
No better reason than to get some Zzzzzz's!
I'm a wine nut. Three years ago, I tended to be almost completely white or blush wines. Now the preference is reds. It is a gradual thing. I started with sweeter reds, now I drink semi sweet to semi dry.
There are about 20 bottles here, but they're too expensive to just crack open.
The Long Island wines Joyce-Anne speaks of? If you get your hands on a bottle of Pindar Spring Splendor or Summer Blush? Lovely. (though I'm partial to their Sweet Scarlett now)
Hmmmm, I like that.
Maybe we could share a bottle one day after all...
I love Reislings, too, my favorite wine!
Mr Hyphen likes Rieslings, too. I like some merlots, some whites... but I never know what to buy, so I go on other's suggestions. My fave is blush. I think blush is reserved for the lilly-dippers of wine drinking. I don't care. I've consumed more than my share of pink wine. YUM.
LOL, sleep catches up with me on occasion too. That's what happens though when you spend all kinds of time writing, and working and blogging.
Beer is my preference, but I prefer good German ale or lager, or many of the micro brews. Not a big fan of the major brand names. I get a six pack, and it lasts me about three to four weeks.
Cat: yes. Sleeeeeep.
Suzanne: I will see can I find them.
Jientje: Yes. We will.
Karen: And that's part of what makes you a Fab grandma.
Hyphen Mama: Whatever you find tasty is the best wine for you. Period.
Eric S: I like me some good beer, too. A little Anchor Steam or Bass Ale suits me fine.
Oooh, I do love wine!
I tend to agree with you. I'm definitely a white wine drinker for the most part and never dry.
That being said, I'm trying to expand into reds and it's quite hit and miss...but there is something quite nice and warming about red that I want!
Riesling is yummie :)
I changed my taste from mainly whites (coming from that region) to more reds in the last few years.
For whatever reason :)
